I don’t think you’re missing anything at all Richard, and wholeheartedly agree!

I think in his dislike for the character he played, Briers himself possibly overlooked that Barbara had total agency in her actions, and wasn’t bullied, cajoled shoe-horned into the life the Goods lived at all. In fact, she embraced it, as you say arguably even more so than he did!

In a lot of the episodes Barbara is the voice of reason to Tom’s mania, and when she puts her foot down she gets her way….

Tom often sulks for a while (because he’s basically a child!) but it does show who wore the trousers and it wasn’t him!

Am I missing something, because I never quite agreed that Barbara was somehow obedient, and did everything she was told? Granted, Tom’s self sufficiency obsession was hopelessly unrealistic, but as I remember it from the first episode, Barbara was never forced into the project. In fact, once she made up her mind, she was almost more committed than Tom. She was also more than ready to criticise Tom when he went off on one of his crazy schemes, especially when he failed to consult her, and she had considerable influence on her husband’s actions. Yes, she did suffer as a result, but I think it’s a little patronizing to suggest that she didn’t enter into the self sufficiency project with her eyes wide open. What do you think?
